Many have said how liberated it’s made them feel.

IT’S BEEN A liberating few years for women.

Growing up in an era where we were told we could do anything, we slowly realised that we could do anything as long as we were good girls who didn’t break the rules. We’ve been busy the past couple years repealing the Eighth, speaking out about sexual violence in order to end stigma and shame, and also acknowledging that the beauty industry feeds on our insecurities stemming from the fact we don’t look like Gisele.

Part of the beauty standard is that you need long hair to be ‘feminine’ and to be attractive to men.

But we’re sick of waiting around like Rapunzel in the tower and are in the mood to shave our head, climb down the tower, and rescue ourselves!

Here’s 9 celebrities who have rocked the buzzcut look.

1. Kristen Stewart

Stewart explained  how her shaved head, undertaken for a role, made her feel:

I wanted to do this for a long time for novel sake. At some point in your life you want to be able to do that [rubbing her head] … It feels amazing. I just want to head bang all day.

She said:

‘It’s the most freeing thing, I highly recommend it. I think every woman should do it.’

N’yongo said  she first shaved her head, aged 18, and felt empowered by it:

‘It was almost a dare to myself: Can I live without hair?
It was so scary but so liberating because I went completely bald. That was definitely a liberating stage. I had nothing to hide behind. I had my hair short for a very long time after that.

4. Jessie J

Jessie J has shaved her head twice. The first time for charity, and the second time because she liked the look.

Cara’s takeaway  from shaving her head for a role was this:

The way you look, I think, it’s so important to feel beautiful, no matter if you have hair. It doesn’t matter at all.

O’Connor loves having her head shaved so much, that she once said:

I don’t feel like me unless I have my hair shaved. So even when I’m an old lady, I’m going to have it.

8. Amber Rose

I think that I’d definitely seen Sinead O’Connor’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ video. I was inspired by her.

And I grew up in Philly… Eve was really popular, and my friends said, ‘Please don’t do it, Amber, you’re gonna look crazy.’ And, of course, me being me, I rebelled against everyone and went straight down the middle at a barber shop. Fourteen years later, I still have it.
The best is that once you cut and bleach it, you have a good three days of waking up and literally your hair being done. But every three days, you have to cut and bleach it, which becomes a process. It’s maintenance.

9. Natalie Portman

Natalie explained  that although the head shaving was an act of violence against her character in V For Vendetta, that for her, because it was a choice, it was ‘wonderful’:

It was actually kind of wonderful to throw vanity away for a little bit because as a woman you’re always expected to be primping and preening yourself so it was a pretty nice opportunity to be not thinking about that stuff for a while.
