The Bray musician, full name Andrew Hozier-Byrne, is set to appear on The Meaning of Life with Gay Byrne this week. In some new clips released today, we can tell it will be full of touchy moments.

When the topic of baptism comes up, he says the whole idea is ‘absurd’, after Gay says he’s ‘cross’ about it.

“I’m not cross about the idea of baptism, I just think the idea that when a child is born and the idea that this is something that is inherently sinful and needs to be cleansed in order for it to be all good with its creator, I think that’s an absurd concept”.

He’s then questioned by Gay who says his concept may be wrong, but instead, baptism means “we all have the potential within us to be bad as adults, taking on baptism is a sign you’re joining Christian community with the intention of being good and doing good rather than bad”.

Hozier shoots back, “Surely you’d teach a child those concepts without cleaning him without his permission”.

Give him PATIENCE.

In another clip, Gay brings up the many religious themes in Hozier’s songs, but asks him if his generation is ‘cross and resentful’ about the Catholic church and the guilt they imposed.

ahno

I think these things drip through more generations than we would think. No surprise I have strong opinions about where I think the church should stick its nose out of and I have strong opinions as to what authority it does not have when speaking about sexuality or the relationship of two people.

Hozier’s Take Me To Church video racked up over 80 million hits on YouTube due to the song’s powerful video highlighting couples living under homophobic regimes.
