17 pizzas to try in Ireland before you die

And not a Domino’s in sight.

1. Manifesto, Rathmines, Dublin

This Rathmines joint has been a contender for Dublin’s best pizza for some time now. Try the Mamy (aubergines, Parma ham, Parmesan cheese and fresh mozzarella). It won ‘best pizza in the world’ back in 2006 and they’re justifiably proud of it.

2. Uncle Pete’s, Cork

In 2003, chef Aaron Buckley returned to Cork after 10 years abroad. He decided the local pizza wasn’t up to scratch. So he opened this place and named it after his Uncle Pete (yes, really). It’s been serving up excellent pies made with fresh ingredients ever since.

3. Glynn’s Kitchen, Galway

The position of ‘beloved local takeaway’ is a coveted one. But Glynn’s are pretty much nailing it. Also, they sell a pizza called “The Cure”, and it’s not about the band.

4. Little Wing, Belfast

Some of their pizzas are so massive they have triangular boxes to take away individual slices. Nuff said.

5. Paulie’s Pizza, Ballsbridge, Dublin

Opened in 2010 by the people who run local institution Juniors around the corner, Paulie’s Pizza follows the same philosophy of serving up delicious edible objects in large portions. Except this time, it’s with pizza.

6. Fast Al’s, Cork

On Fast Al’s website, it says “the late night queue is a must have experience for any visitor to the city looking for an authentic experience”. And that’s before you even get to the food: piping-hot slices best enjoyed on the run.

7. Da Mimmo, North Strand, Dublin

One of Dublin’s classic hidden gems, this tiny place on the North Strand serves up wonderful pizza at wonderful prices. Their cheapest one is €8.50. Sure you’d hardly get a beer for that some places.

8. Villa Italia, Belfast

Red check tablecloths, terracotta walls, columns: this place a stone’s throw from Queen’s really went all out on the Italian decor. Happily they make up for it by serving highly recommended pizza. The Biancaneve comes with parma ham, chorizo, roasted red onion, parmesan and rocket.

9. Gino’s, Waterford

A Waterford institution for 25 years, and for good reason. As one DailyEdge.ie staff member put it simply: “You’d always go there.” Oh, and did we mention they make their own ice cream?

10. Dave’s Pizza, Dublin (various locations)

Dave’s Wood Fired Pizza used to serve out the back window of the Speak Easy Cafe Bar, formerly Shebeen Chic between Dame Lane and George’s Street. Since that shut down, Dave has taken to his van and tours the lunchtime markets filling hungry workers with a wide variety of creative toppings. One to look out for.

11. Novecento, Cork

Classic hand-baked pizza served with classic ingredients. Say no more.

12. Pizza e Porchetta, Dublin

A relatively new (and relatively posh) addition to the Dublin pizza scene, Pizza e Porchetta has already carved out a name for itself as a reliable destination for excellent cheese-and-tomato-and-other-stuff-on-a-round-base. But fancy, like.

13. Gaillot & Gray Wood Fired Pizza, Greystones

Cooked in a traditional wood oven and served out the back of a silver Citroen van in a car park in Greystones. Hold us.

14. Independent Pizza, Drumcondra, Dublin

When we asked our colleagues where the best pizza in Ireland was, about three of them suggested this place. Other than the inexplicable fact that they STILL don’t deliver, it’s pretty much got it all. Try the Smokey Joe for something a little different.

15. Pizza Pasta Napoli, Galway

A pizza joint so real they don’t even have a website (that we could find, anyway). In fact, their only trace online is all the people posting variations on ‘omg delicious’. We’ll take that.

16. Pat’s Pizza, Letterkenny

Thirty years in business last year, and still pumping out some of the finest pizzas in northeast Donegal. Frankly,  we nearly lost our lives scrolling through their Twitter feed just now to find the picture above.

17. Bottega Toffoli, Dublin

Hidden away at the back of Dublin Castle, this little place is run by an Irish woman and an Italian man. In the words of one staffer here: “Their pizza is UNREAL.”
