IKEA starts serving beer

But not in the Republic of Ireland, sadly. Who’s for a trip to Belfast?

IF THERE’S ONE problem we have with furniture shopping, it’s that it doesn’t involve alcohol.

When you’ve elbowed your way through a sea of jostling pushchairs towards the shelving unit of your dreams, only to find the last one snatched from under your gaze by a gimlet-eyed young dad from Rathgar – that’s a pain that meatballs alone won’t dull.

Step forward Ikea. The Swedish giant has perfected the home-decor-shopping experience by selling beer to the traumatised masses exiting its stores.

Two beers – Öl Lager Ljus and Öl Lager Mörk, or light and dark lagers to you and me – are now on sale in the Swedish Food Market section, just past the checkouts, in UK stores.

Sadly, an Ikea spokesperson has confirmed to the Daily Edge that the beer will not be available in the Dublin store.

He said the beers are produced by Krönleins Bryggeri AB, in Sweden, and are “sold globally, with the exception of some markets where there are legal restrictions.”

Here are the beers in question:
