Gardaí clash with violent protesters after 40,000 take to the streets in protest at higher registration fees.

Updated 15.28, Nov 4

NEW PICTURES HAVE EMERGED of the riots that broke out on the streets of Dublin yesterday after a massive march in protest at the government’s proposal to increase third level registration fees.

Mounted officers and gardaí in riot gear were called to a number of locations in Dublin and confronted a number of protesters from left-wing political groups, with six people arrested.

The riots broke out at the end of a demonstration where up to 40,000 students had marched on government buildings in protest at government plans to raise the third-level registration fee from €1,500 to €3,000.

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) said that if the registration fee rises again thousands of students will be forced to drop-out of college. The current charge is €1,500 but it is speculated to rise to as much as €2,500 under measures in the coming Budget.

USI told TheJournal.ie that a total of 40,000 protesters filled the streets today, and last night president Gary Redmond told RTÉ News that his union distanced itself from the actions of those who had conflicted with Gardaí.
