Hundreds of Irish people came together to write this beautiful poem about our little country

It’d bring a tear to a glass eye.

WHAT IS IRELAND, really? A big bundle of quirks and contradictions, if this lovely poem is anything to go by.

Earlier this month, Carlow comedian Aidan Strangeman asked the members of the enormously popular Oh My God What A Complete Aisling (OMGWACA) Facebook group to contribute a line to a poem called ‘Ireland Is…’, inspired by poet Colm Keegan.

People responded in their hundreds, and Strangeman put the most popular lines together to create a funny and often poignant poem about today’s Ireland.

‘Ireland Is…’ was so well-received on OMGWACA that he decided to turn it into a video in aid of Focus Ireland (you can donate to here), writing on Facebook:

It was suggested we should make a video with various OMGWACA members saying selected lines for a charitable cause, and given the references to the house and home, Focus Ireland was the obvious choice.

“This is a poem about how important home is to all of us,” he said. “It is disgraceful that so many will be without a home this Christmas.”

Irish people from all over the world took part, and the resulting video beautifully brings the poem to life:

If that doesn’t get you misty eyed… Well done to all who took part!
