IT’S HURLING’S BIGGEST of the year as Kilkenny and Tipperary battle it out in Croke Park to take the All-Ireland title.
To mark the occasion historian Liam Hogan has dug out this report from the 1814 Limerick Gazette which details a hurling match played in Kennington Common in London “between 21 Irish men and 21 (said to be) Russians”.
It seems like the Russians (if they really were Russians) took the Kennington Common version of the Liam McCarthy Cup back in 1814. For shame.
