IRISH IS A subject which many of us found difficult in school. You seemed to spend every year relearning the past tense of the 11 irregular verbs and then suddenly out of nowhere BAM it’s the modh coinníollach. A truly traumatic time.
Ireland Simpsons Fans famed for its many, many, many memes about everything from Brexit to cans to Wrestlemania has decided to take a crack at the feelings we had trying to learn our native tongue and the results are nothing short of excellent.
It started with a simple little joke. Puns? As Gaeilge?
And quickly descended into the fear that was the Irish oral.
How determined you were to get ALL your tenses in.
And how confident you were during your oral if you went to a Gaelscoil.
God help you if the man speaking Donegal Irish came on during your Irish aural.
‘The person who has the Irish exemption during the exam’.
The prick.
Some memes harked back to a more innocent age of Irish.
Others just reminded us that not all of us understood Irish like those of us who attended the Northern Ireland school system.
Or those of us who barely passed ordinary level but wanted to join in anyway.
Some of us just wanted to have some fun.
While some people were reminded that 8 years of primary school and 6 years of Higher Level Irish still isn’t always enough.
And that if we attempted to do our Irish oral again it would probably go something like this.
But we saved the best until last because you have not lived until you have seen Steamed Hams as a Sraith Pictiúr.
Great work everyone.
