8 forthcoming films starring Irish actors that you need to know about
OVER THE LAST few years, we have watched proudly as actors like Saoirse Ronan, Ruth Negga, Colin Farrell, Domhnall Gleeson and Michael Fassbender have made waves across the Atlantic.
But what are they all up to this winter? Here’s the lowdown…
Mother!
Release date: September 15th
Mother! is a bloody horror film about a couple whose relationship is put through the wringer when some uninvited guests show up at their home. The film, which is directed by Black Swan’s Darren Aronofsky, stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem in the lead roles.
More importantly, however, it stars both Domhnall and Brian Gleeson. Keeping it in the family and all that.
Goodbye Christopher Robin
Release date: September 29th
Speaking of Domhnall Gleeson, he stars as beloved author AA Milne in this film about the creation of Winnie The Pooh. And yes, his name is being included in Oscar conversations.
Loving Vincent
Release date: October 13th
So this is an interesting one. Loving Vincent is a Vincent van Gogh biopic and holds the distinction of being the first fully painted animated biopic ever. Every single frame is an oil painting on canvas. Pretty neat, huh?
Our own Saoirse Ronan and Chris O’Dowd lend their voices to the film. Ronan will play Marguerite Gachet, the daughter of van Gogh’s homeopathic physician and the subject of one of his portraits. Chris O’Dowd will play Postman Joseph Roulin, a friend of van Gogh’s.

The Snowman
Release date: October 13th
Based on the bestselling Jo Nesbo novel of the same name, The Snowman is a British crime thriller starring our own Michael Fassebender as a detective investigating a victim’s disappearance in the snow that could be connected to a serial killer.
The film is directed by Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’s Tomas Alfredson so you can bet on it being a moody noir.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Release date: November 17th
This Irish co-production sees Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan pair up with The Lobster director Yorgos Lanthimos for a dark and twisted psychological horror. The film premiered at Cannes earlier this summer to rapturous reviews.
Roman Israel, Esq
Release date: December 1st
The Beguiled, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Roman Israel, Esq – it really is Colin Farrell’s year. This time around, the Farreller stars opposite Denzel Washington in a legal drama from the writer/director of Nightcrawler.
We’re already intrigued.
Molly’s Game
Release date: December 29th
Aaron Sorkin makes his directorial debut on this film about a young cocktail waitress named Molly Bloom who ended up running one of the most exclusive, high-end poker games in Hollywood. Jessica Chastain stars as the titular Molly, but our own Chris O’Dowd also appears in a supporting role.
Lady Bird
Release date: TBA
One of the most highly anticipated indie films of the year is this coming of age story written and directed by Greta Gerwig and starring, you guessed it, Saoirse Ronan.
Ronan plays a high school student who wishes to escape the shackles of conservative upbringing and move to the Big Apple. Dream movie, tbh.
No word yet on when it’s going to be released, but it’s set to premiere at Toronto next month.
