GALWAY MAN GAVAN Hennigan created history earlier this year by becoming the fastest Irishman to row solo across the Atlantic.
And the photos of his arrival in Antigua were something special:
And he’s made a bit of history again this week – by becoming (surely) the first Galway man to grace the front cover of iconic UK gay magazine Attitude:
“Meet Gavan Hennigan, the gay extreme athlete who overcame drug addiction to row solo across the Atlantic.”
Gavan joins the likes of Prince William, David Beckham and Justin Timberlake in the long, long list of massive stars that have been featured on Attitude’s cover stretching all the way back to 1994.
And he has some story to tell.
Gavan spoke to The42.ie last year about his struggles with addiction and mental health issues as a teenager, so he’s not had the traditional route to being an elite athlete.
He touches on that journey in his Attitude interview
I discovered that there was so much stuff I wanted to do: I wanted to surf, I wanted to travel, I wanted to do all these amazing things, but I couldn’t because I was so constricted, so handicapped by low self-esteem.
I like really testing myself and just seeing how tough I really am – how much can I put up with physically, how much can I put up with mentally.
As soon as Gavan himself tweeted out the front cover yesterday, people were all over it
The speculation is that he’s the first Galway man to appear there
And there’s so much pride in that fact
*waves miniature Irish flag*
2017 just keeps getting better and better for Gavan.
