HAIR LOSS IS an incredibly difficult subject for women to discuss, and enduring it can feel like a particularly isolating experience.
In an admirable move this week, Jada Pinkett-Smith opened up about her experience of hair loss while appearing on Red Table Talk.
The 46-year-old explained that she has been fielding questions about her recent use of turbans and head scarves, and felt it was time to explain what she has been going through.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about why I’ve been wearing this turban. Well, I’ve been having issues with hair loss. I haven’t talked about it. It’s not easy to talk about, but I am going to talk about it.
Recalling when it first started happening, Jada remembers feeling helpless, telling her mother, Adrienne Canfield Norris, and daughter, Willow Smith, that she was shocked.
It was terrifying when it first started, you know. I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair just in my hands. And I was just like ‘Oh my God am I going bald?’
Exceptionally honest, Jada admitted she was terrified by the outcome but sought to put it in pesrspective.
It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear. But even in my terror and even in my fear and in the moment of just going ‘Oh my God, why are you so terrified of losing your hair?’
Jada, who has sought medical assistance for her alopecia has not been able to find a cause, and believes it may be down to stress.
Nowadays, the actress accepts the condition.
I really had to put it in a spiritual perspective, like the higher power takes so much from people. People are out here who have cancer, people have sick children. I watch the higher power take things every day and by golly if the higher power wants to take your hair, that’s it? When I looked at it from that perspective it really did settle me.
Jada, along with her mother and daughter, discuss matters personal to their own experience every week on Red Table Talk.
