VETERAN BELFAST ACTOR JJ Murphy has passed away just days after filming his first scenes for Game of Thrones.
Murphy, 86, had signed on to play Ser Denys Mallister – an elder member of The Night’s Watch – in the hit series, but died on Friday, four days after filming his first scenes according to RTÉ.

Murphy, who also had credits in Irish film productions such as Angela’s Ashes and Mickybo and Me, was well known to Belfast theatre audiences, starring in numerous stage productions over the years.
According to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Murphy worked in The Lyric Theatre for many years, where he nurtured the younger generation of acting talent, including the likes of Liam Neeson and Ciaran Hinds.
It is unclear as of yet whether Game of Thrones producers will recast the part of Ser Danys Mallister or simply rewrite around Murphy’s character.
