Snow was speaking to Rickman’s friend, One Foot in the Grave actor Richard Wilson, about Rickman’s life and career.

But he seemingly couldn’t stop himself making reference to Wilson’s character Victor Meldrew when he asked the actor if he knew about Rickman’s illness:

Snow: So it wasn’t a case of “I don’t believe it!” then?
Wilson: No, I saw him earlier this week and to some extent it was a release today. It was still a terrible shock.

The uncomfortable moment wasn’t missed by the viewers at home, who complained that the joke was in poor taste:

Snow has been responding to some of the criticism on Twitter today, apologising ‘unreservedly’ and saying the joke was made in the heat of a ‘sad moment’.
