FOLLOWING A SHORT period of ill health, Karl Lagerfeld passed away today at the age of 85.
Announcing the news, the House of Karl Lagerfeld expressed their deep regret over his death.
“He was one of the most influential and celebrated designers of the 21st century and an iconic, universal symbol of style,” they wrote on an Instagram post which has been liked almost 900,000 times in just three hours.
Driven by a phenomenal sense of creativity, Karl was passionate, powerful and intensely curious. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.
Considered one of the most influential and easily recognised figures within the fashion industry, his death has been met with an outpouring of grief on social media in the hours that followed the announcement.
From Donatella Versace to Kristen Stewart, heartfelt tributes have flooded in for Chanel’s creative director since the news broke earlier today.
While there is little doubt that the late designer divided opinion over the course of his career, today those who knew him were keen to acknowledge his creativity, ingenuity and generosity of spirit, with many also paying tribute to the kindness he extended them.
