IT’S 20 YEARS now since Titanic graced our screens for the first time – and it was the ship that launched a thousand arguments and moaning on about that “door” scene.
Kate Winslet is back on the promotional tour scene thanks to her new film Wonder Wheel, so there’s naturally going to be loads of Titanic questions given the anniversary.
Last night, she was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and he had so many questions waiting for her
Colbert had an idea:
“There are diehard Titanic fans among the Late Show staff. I have a separate card just from my staff – we’ll do a lightning round”
“How often do you listen to Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On”
This was an easy one for Kate:
Absolutely never.
Colbert jumped right on to the film’s most famous scene:
Let’s talk about the sweaty handprint scene – the sex in the car. Was that scripted and how sweaty did it get?
I don’t think it was scripted, I think we came up with it on the day. It did get quite sweaty in the car but we were spritzed down with spray Evian bottles to make us look like we were really in the throes of… yeah.
The host then asked did she really get pneumonia after filming the scene in the water:
“No, but I did get hypothermia” and then followed it up with “Yes, I was really f**king cold”
Why did it have to be cold?
There were lots of big tanks and lots of water – and that amount of water I think honestly they couldn’t heat it because there was too much of it.
The interrogation continued:
“Could you keep a straight face when you said ‘draw me like one of your French girls’”
She just about held it together:
What kind of a question is that?
I should have laughed and gone ‘don’t be ridiculous’ but no
Kate then revealed that her son was in the cinema for that famous sketching scene:
I do remember covering my son’s eyes. It was in a big movie theatre when it came out in 3D, and I was like “aww forgot about this bit”
It was at that point he turned to me and said “mum, can we go back to the hotel and get pudding?’ and I was like ‘YES, absolutely. Let’s leave, we’re leaving.’
The main revelation from the interview was that Winslet auditioned with Matthew McConaughey for Leo’s part:
I auditioned with Matthew, isn’t that weird? Never said that in public before. I auditioned with Matthew, which was completely fantastic. It would have been a totally different film, it just wouldn’t have been the whole Jack and Rose thing.
They then recreated *that* door scene using Colbert’s desk
But she was taking no responsibility for Jack’s death:
He just should have tried harder to get on that door.
She was *never* going to blame Rose, in fairness.
