IT IS NOW 2017 so there are two things we need to address before we get into this. The first is the fact that people still call this a ‘man’ bun and not simply a bun, and the fact that people kind of gave up on wearing buns about three years ago.
In an effort to diversify, Mattel have released 14 new dolls with a whole new range of body types, different ethnic backgrounds and haircuts.
One of these haircuts was a bun. It seems like a weird choice considering that there have been plenty of trends since. Somehow, the makers of Barbie have only just discovered the most controversial men’s hairstyle of 2014. Here it is:
First, we’ve got to ask… Why is his bun plastic? Surely it would have been even better for the diversity thing if they had given him more realistic hair that could be styled in different ways.
The rest of the Ken Dolls are definitely more diverse than previous editions, but they all seem to share the same River Island menswear wardrobe from 2014.

While it’s not a bad effort, it’s worth remembering that the move comes sixteen years after Bratz launched Asian, Latinx and black dolls (of both genders).
