Here's why everyone's talking about Kerry Washington's powerful speech on equality

If only every awards speech was this compelling.

THE GLAAD MEDIA Awards took place in Los Angeles on Saturday night, and there has been only one speech being talked about since.

Scandal star Kerry Washington won the award on the night for her special contribution to promoting equal rights in the media – and her speech certainly lived up the billing:

Some of the best quotes from the wide-ranging speech include many dealing with minority issues

Women, poor people, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, intersex people: we have been pitted against each other and made to feel like there are limited seats at the table for those of us who fall into the category of ‘other’.

Challenging members of those groups that are opposed to marriage equality, she went on to say

We can’t say that we believe in each other’s fundamental humanity and then turn a blind eye to the reality of each others’ existence and the truth of each other’s hearts. We must be allies. And we must be allies in this business because to be represented is to be humanised. And as long as anyone, anywhere is being made to feel less human, our very definition of humanity is at stake and we are all vulnerable.

The speech is causing waves online, as nearly everyone is agreed that it was a powerful and moving piece of public speaking

So, yeah. She absolutely nailed it. If only every awards speech was this good.
