King's Speech Oscar damaged after being dropped by producer's infant
THE OSCAR PRESENTED to The King’s Speech producer Simon Egan came in for some rough treatment at a post awards party.
Egan’s 15-month-old daughter, Lara, caused some alarm when she dropped the 13.5 inch statuette onto concrete. The Oscar suffered several dents and some gold plating was chipped off the chest.
The crew of the film were celebrating its success in an apartment rented jointly by Simon Egan and his co-producer Gareth Unwin. The previous night the film had picked up four awards, including best picture.
But the celebrations were halted briefly when the crowd heard the Oscar slip from the toddlers hands, as Egan recalls:
The two producers contacted the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, who replaced the damaged Oscar with a brand new one, reports The Daily Telegraph (click to see the candid camera ‘oops’ moment).
Unwin quipped that the crew had forgiven his co-producer’s daughter for damaging their Oscar. “You can’t stay cross with someone as cute as Lara,” he said.
