LAST WEEK, AN interview with Kristen Bell piqued the attention of the public after the actress said she used fairytales to address the issue of consent with her two young daughters.
Speaking to Parents Magazine, the actress used Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as an example, explaining that she used themes raised in the fairytale to discuss concepts like morality.
Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you can not kiss someone if they’re sleeping!
In the days that followed, the 38-year-old actress was accused of hypocrisy given the fact she plays Princess Anna in the Frozen franchise.
Twitter users accused the mother-of-two, along with Keira Knightley who imposed a Cinderella ban in her family home, of eschewing these sentiments when it came to furthering their careers and increasing their incomes.
Kristen, You are a talented young woman. I do however note the hypocrisy of your convictions about Snow White. It seems to me that it’s ok for you to earn money perpetuating the fact you like being labeled as a “Princess” in your Enterprise commercial. Don’t be part of the noise.

Nice @IMKristenBell. You made millions by doing voiceover for @Disney's Frozen. You're hypocrisy has no bounds! Climb down off of your pedestal and do something constructive. #Done!

I’m disgusted with Hollywood hypocrites. They didn’t have an issue signing contracts to play Disney princesses 👸 👑, cashing their huge checks.

Why the outrage now @Keira_Knightley & @IMKristenBell ?#PatheticAttentionSeekers
Kristen has responded to the online backlash by clarifying her point and explaining that she simply wants to foster an environment where her children feel comfortable questioning certain tropes.
I find the outrage annoying and misplaced as well. I’m a mom who wants my girls to possess critical thinking and aks [sic] a ton of questions. So that’s what we do when we read books.
Kristen also dismissed suggestions that her participation in Frozen rendered her opinion invalid.
The actress encouraged social media users to compare Snow White to Frozen if they genuinely wanted to understand her perspective on the issue.
It’s cute that you guys are making jokes about something that I feel is very important. I’d be happy to send you copies and Snow White and Frozen, and you can see the differences. How far the example set for women has come.
“It might enlighten your point of view,” she added.
