Kristen Stewart said she's 'open to dating men' - here's why that's not news

“Bisexual woman reveals she’s bisexual.”

KRISTEN STEWART IS on the cover of this month’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar, discussing love, fame, style and more.

Over the course of the interview, the 27-year-old actress was forced to field questions on her sexual orientation for, oh, the umpteenth time.

The magazine asked if she would be open to dating men again to which she responded:

Yeah, totally. Definitely… Some people aren’t like that. Some people know that they like grilled cheese and they’ll eat it every day for the rest of their lives. I want to try everything. If I have grilled cheese once I’m like, ‘That was cool, what’s next?”

Afterwards, media outlets tripped over themselves to report that Kristen Stewart, who is currently dating model Stella Maxwell, isn’t opposed to the idea of dating a man.

Kristen Stewart is openly bisexual, so it’s unclear why her latest remarks are newsworthy. “Bisexual woman is open to dating people of different genders.”

Yeah, no s**t.

It’s no secret that the media has struggled to accept Kristen Stewart’s sexuality. Since she started dating her co-star Robert Pattinson in 2008, she has had her personal life pored over and scrutinised to a frankly insane degree.

She was hounded by the paparazzi and forced to issue a public apology to Pattinson when photographs emerged of her with director Rupert Sanders. (Never mind the fact that she was 22 years old and he was 41 years old.)

Donald Trump accused her of cheating on Robert Pattinson “like a dog” and tweeted obsessively about their relationship for weeks.

When she started dating Alicia Cargile, she became the subject of countless “gal pal” headlines from newspapers too terrified to consider the possibility that this young actress might be romantically involved with a woman.

Bisexual people are frequently treated as though they’re merely confused or indecisive. They’re asked to account for themselves in a way others aren’t. (“What side are you really on?”)

But as Stewart explained to The Guardian this year, being bisexual does not mean you’re confused.

You’re not confused if you’re bisexual. It’s not confusing at all. For me, it’s quite the opposite.
Because sexuality isn’t black and white.
The whole issue of sexuality is so grey. I’m just trying to acknowledge that fluidity, that greyness, which has always existed. But maybe only now are we allowed to start talking about it.

If a bisexual actress says she’s bisexual and makes a statement that tallies with being bisexual, that is not news. Expressing an interest in dating men doesn’t mean Kristen Stewart is now straight. Dating a person of her gender doesn’t automatically make her gay. It simply means that she’s open to dating men, women or non-binary individuals.

It’s time we stopped casting doubt on bisexuality or treating bisexual people as anomalies. And it’s time we stopped asking Kristen Stewart to explain herself.
