THE AMERICAN FLAG was once a staple in the aesthetic of Lana Del Rey.
She clearly loved everything Americana in the era of her debut release Born to Die. It featured songs like National Anthem which glorified American culture from the 1950s and 1960s.
The music video for the track even featured herself and A$AP Rocky playing house in the role of Jackie Kennedy and JFK before his assassination.
Now, all of that has been spoiled by Donald Trump.
In an interview with Pitchfork the singer said “it’s certainly uncomfortable” to be romantic about America when Trump is ‘the nation’s biggest celebrity’. She went on:
I’m not going to have the American flag waving while I’m singing Born to Die. It’s not going to happen. I’d rather have static.
It’s a transitional period, and I’m super aware of that. I think it would be inappropriate to be in France with an American flag. It would feel weird to me now – it didn’t feel weird in 2013.
One of the new tracks on her new album Lust For Life, which was released on Friday acknowledges the tumultuous political situation and how it is affecting women in particular.
The track is called ‘God Bless America – And All The Beautiful Women In It’ and she pointed out with Pitchfork that it’s “a little shoutout to the women and anyone else who doesn’t always feel safe walking down the street late at night.”
On the 24th of February, the singer listed the dates in which she would be casting spells on Donald Trump, for any fans who might be interested in joining her.
It read “At the stroke of midnight Feb 24, March 26, April 24, May 23. Ingredients can b found online” and featured this photograph of her:
The dates she listed were the evenings that would feature a waning crescent moon. He has yet to be removed from office, so obviously people were Googling the wrong ingredients.
She later confirmed to NME that she definitely has cast spells in the hopes that they will remove Donald Trump from office. “Yeah, I did it. Why not? Look, I do a lot of shit.” She replied when it was brought up.
