THE MUSIC INDUSTRY was left reeling yesterday when it was announced that Avicii had died at the age of 28.
The Swedish DJ, also known as Tim Bergling passed away in in Muscat, Oman, mere days after he was nominated for a Billboard Music Award for top dance/electronic album.
Confirming his passing, his publicist released a statement, saying: “The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
Tributes flooded social media platforms in the hours that followed the sad announcement, and among contributions from the artist’s peers and fans, Ireland’s Taoiseach extended his condolences.
In a Twitter post, Leo Varadkar paid tribute to the DJ, writing that Wake Me Up was the song of summer 2013.
Unsurprisingly, Leo’s post, which amasssed more than 4,000 likes, was met with some replies suggesting that he was falling victim to the Mean Girls ‘Cool Mom’ syndrome.
Harsh lads, harsh.
However, others were more concerned about his recollection of that particular summer, with Twitter users insisting Blurred Lines, Get Lucky and Timber were more worthy of that title.
