The Star Trek actor passed away today, aged 83.

LEONARD NIMOY, THE American actor famous for playing Mr Spock in Star Trek passed away today at the age of 83.

He had a long and varied career on screen and off – ranging from acting to music, directing and writing. Here are some facts you might not know about him:

1. He directed Three Men and a Baby

He also wrote and directed several movies in the Star Trek franchise, but it was Three Men and a Baby that was his most commercially successful film (it was the highest grossing movie of 1987).

2. He wrote two autobiographies – one called “I Am Not Spock” and the other called “I Am Spock”

Nimoy had a love/hate relationship with his most famous character, Mr Spock from Star Trek, and this was evident with the titles of his two autobiographies.

3. He came up with the famous split-fingered salute on Star Trek

4. He kept his last ever pair of Spock ears from the show

The famous Spock ears from Star Trek were cherished by the actor, as he kept his last ever pair of prosthetic ears with him until his final day. He even spoke about how the character impacted on his real life personality:

5. He appeared in two different episodes of The Simpsons playing himself

6. Just like his famous character, Nimoy was a vegetarian

Sharing the trait with Spock himself, Nimoy was a vegetarian.

7. He released 5 music albums

Obviously known for his acting, Nimoy branched into many facets of entertainment and creativity. He released five albums of music in total – some in the character of Spock and others as himself, with a folk style.
