LEONARDO DICAPRIO TOOK home the Leading Actor award at last night’s Bafta ceremony for his Oscar-tipped performance in The Revenant.
Unfortunately, however, he irritated some people in his acceptance speech. DiCaprio humbly credited as his inspiration “so many British actors”, naming… Peter O’Toole and Daniel Day Lewis.
Leo declared:
As an actor I’ve been so influenced by so many British actors over the years. I remember watching Tom Courtenay in The Loneliness Of The Long Distance runner… all the way to Gary Oldman in State of Grace… and of course the late great Peter O’Toole and everything that Daniel Day-Lewis has ever done.
Some people were not pleased.
Now in fairness, Daniel Day-Lewis has joint Irish-British citizenship. And Peter O’Toole apparently had two birth certificates, one from each country. But still. You can’t just let these things slide.
Leo’s words come, of course, after he memorably introduced ‘Dumble Gleeson’ at the SAG Awards. WHY DO YOU HATE IRELAND, LEO?
This morning, DailyEdge managed to capture this rare image of Leonardo DiCaprio reacting to the news:
And this is before we even get to the feelings we have about Brooklyn winning Outstanding British Film. (At least there are good reasons for that, but hey… Saoirse Ronan! Iorla Ó Lionáird! All the gang!)
Anyway. Leo, please read this without delay.
