Lily Allen has opened up about her identity crisis and says she was bullied into doing the John Lewis advert in 2013

She said that her label made her do it to keep morale up.

LILY ALLEN IS known for being candid about her life and struggles.

In a recent interview with Vulture she opened up about struggling to be a musician and a mother simultaneously and having to fight against everyday sexism within the her industry.

She addressed her frustrations with working under a major label who seemed to want to control her rather than let her express herself creatively.

I was trying to do behind-the-scenes, two-and-a-half-minute movies for YouTube before you could load videos to Instagram. I’ve always been one step ahead. I wish they would say, “Lily knows about the internet, let’s listen to her.” But no. The information has to come from some digital marketing male.

She also spoke about her struggles with motherhood saying that she cannot do a proper tour in America but that she’s willing to take the hit commercially because that’s just the way it is.

If I’m failing them I can’t concentrate on my music, and if I’m not happy and creatively content then I can’t mother properly. I have to have that balance.

Allen also spoke candidly about her last album Sheezus which flopped and the impact of that had on her mental health.

I was having an identity crisis. I was listening to everybody else for the first time. Maybe I had postnatal depression. All I wanted was to get on the radio. I wanted magazine covers. When those things didn’t go to plan, my world collapsed.

She also revealed that she didn’t want to do the John Lewis advert which brought her back to our attention in 2013 after 4 years.

They made me do it. I said, “I don’t wanna be in a John Lewis advert.” And they said, “If you don’t, the morale’s gonna be low at the label.”

She admitted that in the midst of her identity crisis, she cheated on her ex husband Sam Cooper and lost pretty much everything.

I lost my marriage, I lost my house, I lost my mind. I literally had to hit rock bottom and build myself back up. Then I had my stalker. I couldn’t have been more isolated. I lost all of my friends. I couldn’t talk to anybody. I was on my own.

Allen is about to release a new album called ‘No Shame’ on June 8th which is set to address her post natal depression, identity crisis and the last few years which has been turbulent to say the least. No doubt that it’ll be worth a listen.
