BROADCASTER AND JOURNALIST Louise McSharry has announced she’s pregnant, just over a year after receiving the cancer all clear.

McSharry, who documented her treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and the knock-on effect on her fertility in a frank RTE documentary, has described the “dark place” she was in when doctors told her and husband Gordon about the odds of conceiving naturally being stacked against them.

Where I should have been at 35 or 40 on the scale of being able to conceive, I was a two.

The couple – who were married last August – were advised by doctors that it might happen, and to give it a go…

Then, a few months after we started trying, I got pregnant. We spent the seven weeks between finding out and going for a scan in total disbelief, barely telling anyone, and trying not to get our hopes up. This wasn’t meant to have happened! Then, last week, we saw our baby wriggling around on a screen in The Rotunda, and now there is simply no denying it.

Describing their feelings as a mixture between delight and terror, the couple are “incredibly grateful to have beaten the odds”, while also acknowledging the struggle many other people are currently facing in trying to get pregnant.

McSharry is gearing up to release her first book this summer, which will tell the fascinating, emotional and inspiring story of her life thus far.
