Love/Hate US remake confirmed, to be announced 'in weeks'

Writer Stuart Carolan said the remake would likely be a complete reinvention of the hit show.

A US REMAKE of RTE drama Love/Hate is set to be announced within the next few weeks, the show’s Irish creator has revealed.

Writer Stuart Carolan today confirmed reports that producers are in talks with their US counterparts on making a new version of the hit show set in the States.

“It will be remade,” he told the Pat Kenny Show on Newstalk. “It’s only a matter of weeks before it’s announced.”

Carolan said the remake was likely to involve a complete rethinking of the show, rather than simply transplanting the characters and plotlines to a US city.

I would guess they will reinvent it entirely. The [remakes] that do well are the ones that don’t stick too rigidly to the original. The first two series of the [US] Office faltered until they Americanised it.

US producers had been attracted by Love/Hate’s viewing figures and audience share here, Carolan said. Sunday night’s episode had an average viewership of 872,000 and a 52 per cent share of the TV audience.
