15 YEARS AFTER Dublin City Council voted unanimously to erect a statue in honour of Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, plans are now going ahead.
On January 30 next year, a statue in honour of the iconic musician will be unveiled on Dublin’s Guild Street. The date will mark the 35th anniversary of Luke’s passing at the age of 43.
Dublin City Councillor, Christy Burke, confirmed the plans in an emotional post on his Facebook page this week.
“Some brilliant news not only for Sherrif St area, but all the Luke Kelly fans throughout the world,” he wrote alongside a photo of the late musician.
“After a motion I put in with DCC and working with Luke’s family, Luke’s statue will be erected on the 30th of January Guild St.” (sic)

Paying tribute to Luke’s family and his colleagues, Councillor Burke continued:
This is defiantly (sic) one of the proudest moments in my political career and I would sincerely like to thank Luke’s family and all my fellow councillors for their support.
“He will surely be very proud today,” Councillor Burke concluded. “Luke was a close friend for many years and today has brought a tear to my eye.”
The news has been met with positivity on social media, with many expressing interest in attending the unveiling next month.
