MACKLEMORE PERFORMED HIS equality anthem ‘Same Love’ at a National Rugby League final in Australia, calling it “one of the greatest honours” of his career.

The country is currently taking part in a vote on marriage equality, and the rapper had been criticised by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and thousands of ‘No’ voters for mixing politics with sport.

Abbot tweeted:

Footy fans shouldn’t be subjected to a politicised grand final. Sport is sport.”

Macklemore responded to the comments in a radio interview, dismissing the idea he wouldn’t perform the song.

“It’s interesting actually cause I’m gonna play Same Love and they’re going through trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia,” he said.

So I’m getting a lot of tweets from angry old white dudes in Australia. Today I think there is a petition to ban me from playing.”

Following his performance, Macklemore said on social media: “Your message was heard loud and clear, in the face of hate.”

He also pledged Australian proceeds from the song to the Vote Yes campaign.
