WITH A VOICE like pebbles stuck in a frog’s throat, Macy Gray made for an unlikely pop star.

But her debut single I Try remains her biggest hit, and with its lovelorn lyrics it’s no surprise that we all lapped it up.

Gray’s raspy, I-just-smoked-10-cigarettes-and-drank-a-bottle-of-wine-to-get-over-my-ex vocals make the song just that little bit more heartbreaking.
