Mail Online article about Olympic torch in Ireland draws Twitter criticism
AN ARTICLE ON the website of the Daily Mail with a headline questioning not only the decision to let Jedward carry the Olympic torch through Dublin but the decision to bring the flame to Ireland drew criticism from some Irish tweeters.
The article on Mail Online bears the headline “If will.i.am irritated you when he carried the torch, look away now! Z-listers Jedward run with Olympic flame… and what is it doing in IRELAND?”
The article by the unnamed ‘Daily Mail reporter’ goes on to say how the decision to allow the flame to cross the border from Northern Ireland will have been “met with raised eyebrows” with further questions about the choice of Jedward to be torchbearers.
“And with their long spikey-blond quiffs the boisterous pair bore more than a passing resemblance to the iconic torch itself. Their inclusion comes after Olympic bosses were criticised for allowing The Voice’s American judge Will.i.am carry the torch,” the article states.
It goes on to note that thousands lined the streets to witness the event as 43 torchbearers in total carried the flame around the city with plenty of colourful pictures from the day thrown in for good measure.
On Twitter some users were not a bit impressed while others wondered if the Mail was taking a leaf out of Starbucks’ book after a tweet from its Irish account yesterday caused a storm on social media:
