Man fired for stealing 1.8 cents from work wins case
A GERMAN MAN WHO was fired for stealing 1.8 cents worth of electricity had won his appeal against his dismissal.
Oliver Beel, who was a network administrator for 19 years at the company, was fired for charging his Segway at work in May 2009.
After charging the device/vehicle for just over an hour, Beel’s boss asked him to remove it. He found out 12 days later that he was fired, Reuters reports.
The German court ruled that dismissal was an overreaction to the offence involved, given the low level of the cost incurred.
The court also pointed out that other employees have charged devices such as mobile phones and digital frames while at work without being penalised.
