'Bread bandit' steals New York bakery truck, makes deliveries
HE’S THE ROBIN Hood of the bakery world – stealing delicious baked goods from the breaded and giving them to the, er, breadless.
Police say a man stole a New York City bakery truck early on Monday morning and began delivering loaves of bread to random businesses.
David Bastar hopped into the Grimaldi’s Home of Bread truck on Manhattan’s Upper East Side while the real driver was making a delivery at a pizzeria.
Wearing only his underwear, Bastar then allegedly began dropping off baguettes, whole-wheat rolls and sourdough bread.
He eventually distributed the entire $8,000 worth of bread, but not to the bakery’s customers – he placed the loaves at the doors of random businesses he came across along the way.
The man has been taken to a hospital for evaluation and is facing charges of criminal possession of stolen goods.
Giving bread to the breadless. A hero in our midst.
