Here's the story behind that bizarre Mariah Carey SodaStream tweet
Sorry, what Mariah?
This out of context and seemingly bonkers tweet from Mariah Carey yesterday had lots of people talking.. and wondering what the blazes was going on.
The seemingly bizarre Sodastream brand placement was actually not so bizarre at all. Carey was paying a visit to the new SodaStream factory in the Negev Desert in southern Israel to, according to The Atlantic, “advocate for coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians”.
This new factory comes with the planned closure of a controversial SodaStream plant in the occupied West Bank. Last year bosses at the fizzy drinks company denied that there were political reasons behind the move (despite pressure from pro-Palestinian groups).
So while there was much bafflement and amusement at Carey’s tweet, there was also many keen to point out their thoughts on SodaStream:
Whoops!

The Atlantic also points out that while the closure of the West Bank factory is seen as a win for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), the location of the new factory means that many Palestinian workers, who don’t have permits to work inside Israel, will lose their jobs.
Last year actress Scarlett Johansson quit her role as an Oxfam ambassador after the charity raised objections to her appearance in an advertising campaign for Sodastream.
