VIDEO: Marilyn Monroe's great on-screen moments
IT HAS BEEN 50 years since Marilyn Monroe’s lifeless body was found in her bedroom at home in California.
The Hollywood actress, who was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on 1 June 1926, spent much of her childhood in foster homes, before going on to become a model.
In 1946, she signed a film contract with Twentieth Century Fox, and so began her career in the movies.
Over the years, she starred in films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot, the latter of which she won a Golden Globe Award for.

With her dyed platinum hair and doe-eyed looks, she was frequently typecast as a ditzy ‘dumb blonde’, and even studied at the Actors Studio to bump up her skills.
She remains a pop culture icon, and her tragic death from a barbiturate overdose has been the subject of much controversy.
Though it was ruled a “probable suicide”, a homicide or accidental suicide was not ruled out.
Today, we mark the 50th anniversary of her passing by celebrating Monroe through some of her most memorable on-screen moments:
