Mary Berry carried bags of white powder through an airport, and was promptly arrested

What were you thinking, Mary?

MARY BERRY IS the grandmother of everyone’s dreams, so the notion of her getting the third degree by a gang of uniformed security, who are convinced she is an international drug smuggler, doesn’t exactly sit easy with us.

But unfortunately that’s exactly what happened when the former Great British Bake-Off judge rocked up to an airport with a stash of small plastic bags filled with white powder.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show which will air tonight, the 83-year-old explained that she almost came acropper in the 90s when she was travelling to the United States on business.

I was arrested 25 years ago. I was going to the US to do some cookery demonstrations and was worried that there might be problems, so I weighed out all the ingredients – flour, sugar – and put them all in little plastic bags

We know guys, we know.

But it’s Mary we’re talking about here, and we refuse to call her bats for not seeing where that move might lead her.

When I arrived at the airport, the sniffer dogs made a beeline for me. Suddenly I was surrounded by uniformed people and my assistant and I were put in separate cells. It was alarming.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the much-loved baker made the mistake of telling authorities that she was planning to make a little dosh from the contents of the offending packages.

When I was asked if I was going to make money from the stuff, I said, ‘I do and my fee has already been agreed’.

Again, we refuse to judge because, well, it’s Mary.
