TONIGHT, LEAVING CERT students will celebrate getting their results – and one Mayo taxi driver is going out of his way to ensure they have a great night.
Joe Freeley (AKA Joe Maxi Taxis) runs a taxi business in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, and he understands that parents worry about their kids getting home safely later.
He has promised to give students free lifts home – and instead of a fare, customers can give a voluntary donation to a charity in need.
This is the third year that Freeley has offered free lifts in exchange for donations to Pieta House, the centre for prevention of self-harm and suicide.
“I know this is a stressful time for kids around the exams,” he explained to DailyEdge.ie last year. “I reared eight healthy children but some people aren’t as lucky.”
Speaking to Today FM earlier today, he said that the donations have gotten bigger and bigger every year:
There has been an awful lot more in the collection bucket than I would have in my pocket if I was charging a fare. The students are amazing.
