IN A RECENT interview with In Style, Melissa McCarthy recalls being asked if was surprised that her ‘tremendous size’ hadn’t stopped her from succeeding in the entertainment industry.

The 48-year-old actress, who has won two Emmys and been nominated for an Oscar, two BAFTAs and two Golden Globes over the course of her career, remembers feeling viscerally shocked by the question.

Alluding to the interviewer in question, Melissa recalled: “I do remember another interview I did for Bridesmaids with somebody who later lost his job for a conversation he had on a bus with someone else. I won’t mention names, but just think about it.”

 He kept asking, “Are you shocked that you actually work in this business at your tremendous size?” He was like, “Oh, your tremendous size, you can actually work?” 

“I just remember all the blood drained out of me. I thought, “With my tremendous size, I could tackle you so quickly,” Melissa told the publication.

But she didn’t; instead she attempted to do the interviewer’s job for him by focusing on the reason they were sitting opposite each other.

Indeed, she recalls doing her utmost to steer the conversation away from her appearance, and towards the film in question, but her interviewer failed, or perhaps refused, to take the hint.

“There were two cameras on him, and one was on me, and he went back to that question three or four times, and I just kept talking about the script or how fun Paul Feig was. He was looking around like, “She’s crazy.”

Thankfully, those present were equally appalled by the line of questioning, and Melissa remembers being assured that the remarks would not make the edit.

“When we left, their producer was horrified and said, “We’ll never play what he said. I’m so sorry,” she said.

Unsurprisingly, Melissa can’t help but compare her treatment with that of her male peers.

It happens all the time, to the point where it’s fascinating because they don’t do it to men. Not to be a jerk or single him out, but when John Goodman was heavier, did anybody ever talk about his girth?
