WHILE APPEARING ON The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, explained that she sought marriage counselling because she was convinced Barack Obama needed fixing.
During a thoroughly enjoyable interview – honestly, is there any other kind when Michelle is involved? – the mother-of-two said that despite having a great relationship with the former US president, they found marriage difficult at times.
And as far as Michelle was concerned at the time, the blame lay at Barack’s door.
I’m one of those wives who said: ‘I’m taking you to marriage counselling so you can be fixed, Barack Obama,’ because I was like ‘I’m perfect’.
In a display of considerable humility, Michelle told Jimmy and the studio audience that her self-awareness back then left a lot to be desired.
“I was like Doctor X, please fix him,” she explained. “And the counsellor looked at me and I was like ‘What are you looking at? I’m perfect?”
Marriage counselling was a turning point for me understanding that it wasn’t up to my husband to make me happy, and I had to realise that I had to fill myself up, that I had to put myself higher on my priority list.
Referring to hashtags like #RelationshipGoals, Michelle said:
I shared that because there are a lot of young people who look at me and Barack, and people they see, and they think ‘Oh I want those…with hashtags relationship goals’, but I want young people to know that marriage is work. Even the best marriages require work.
“I don’t want young people to quit the minute they have a hardship,” she added.
