IN RECENT WEEKS, considerable time has been devoted to the problematic nature of some of the world’s best-loved Christmas songs.
From Fairytale of New York to Baby, It’s Cold Outside, discussion has raged as to whether the former should be censored and if the latter contains some problematic sentiments.
And now, Santa Baby is the latest Christmas song to find itself the subject of discussion after Miley Cyrus gave it a feminist overhaul while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Eschewing the traditional lyrics which sees the singer request myriad gifts, Miley sang a version which included reference to financial independence, equal pay and sexual harassment.
Don’t want diamonds, cash, or stars/Nothing that comes in a box/No more fluff, I’ve had enough/And I can buy my own damn stuff.
Oh, and dick pics get a shout-out too.
Response in the studio audience was positive as was the comment section beneath the video’s upload on YouTube.
I wasn’t ready for such a powerful message but I dig it so much.
A much better version of the song!
Omg Miley this is the best thing ever I’ve seen all day.
If you’ve yet to see it, take a look here.
