27-YEAR-OLD ELLEN WAS taken in by an older friend of hers 10 years ago after it became clear how neglected she was at home. The woman she now calls mom was going out with her father’s friend at the time, and ended up with the teenager when she was just 30 years old.

Ever since she was 17, ‘Ellie’ has been taken care of like she was the Maine woman’s real daughter.

It was never official though, until now. Ellen drew up all the necessary adoption papers and posted her plans to image sharing website Imgur, explaining why she wanted her mum to be her mum for real.

When I woke up early in the morning to go to school, she was there to talk to me and remember where I left my shoes. She taught me to play scrabble and chess, how to make coffee, how to apply to college, and eventually even taught me to like myself. Slowly I realized what she really was to me, and started to call her mom. That was 10 years ago. This mother’s day I want to surprise her by making things official.

Well, it was Mother’s Day in the states on Sunday, so it was the perfect time to hand over the goods.
