PROSECUTORS IN LOS Angeles have announced the Nick Carter will not face charges following an allegation of rape.
Melissa Schuman – formerly of the US girlband Dream – last year claimed that the Backstreet Boy member raped her in 2003, and last month she filed the claim with the LA police.
However, the statute of limitations dictates that prosecution in this case expired in 2013.
Carter strenuously denied the claims made by Schuman in a blog post in 2017, stating:
It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.
In the wake of yesterday’s ruling, his attorney has said that the 38-year wishes to ‘put the matter behind him’.
In a statement to the press, Michael Holtz began by saying: “Nick Carter was cleared today when the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office rejected the charges against him.”
Nick has denied these allegations ever since he first learned of them last year, and was confident the district attorney would conclude that there was no basis to pursue charges against him. He is happy to put this matter behind him.
Carter’s bandmate, Brian Littrell, made reference to ‘fame-seekers’ when interviewed by the press on the matter in August of this year.
This has been going on for a long time and, you know, unfortunately there are fame-seekers that are out there. He’s been forthright and honest with us and we have to stand beside our bandmate, that’s all we can do.
In 2016, California got rid of the statute of limitations for rape, however as it did not have a retroactive element, it can not facilitate historical cases.
