This Irish rugby fan's cheeky selfie with referee Nigel Owens ended in a sound gesture

This fan got a two-finger salute, an excellent selfie, and a jersey out of it. Good haul.

POPULAR WELSH REFEREE Nigel Owens was called in last minute as an assistant ref for Ireland’s clash with Australia at the Aviva Stadium two weeks ago.

An Ireland fan called to Owens as he warmed up on the sidelines, asking him to “give us a wave” for a selfie – he gave him this instead:

The selfie was posted on a number of ‘rugby banter’ Facebook pages and Twitter accounts and found its way back to Owens, who was thoroughly tickled by it.

“All in good fun, though, and they all laughed. Good rugby banter and how it should be,” he told Wales Online.

I’m trying to get a hold of him and will post him my match day ref jersey from the game for being such a great sport… If I can find out who he is, I can get the jersey sorted and signed to him then.

The fan identified himself as Gareth Duncan, and sure enough, Owens’ signed ref jersey arrived for him on Saturday morning. He’s naturally delighted:

What a sounder. Good man, Nige!
