SWEDEN HAS CLAIMED this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with a runaway victory, as Irish hopes were dashed after Jedward failed to make an impact on voters.
Pre-final favourite Sweden claimed an easy win – with its entry, Loreen, setting one of the highest points records of all time on 372, a 113-point margin of victory over the second-place Russian act, Buranovskiye Babushki.
Serbia’s Zeljko Joksimovic came third on 214 points, while hosts Azerbaijan claimed a respectable fourth on 150 points.

Jedward failed to match the impact of their Eurovision debut last year, winning only 46 points with ‘Waterline’ and finishing tied for 19th place alongside Iceland.
The United Kingdom’s entrant, veteran singer Engelbert Humperdinck, took 12 points – including four from Ireland – to avoid finishing bottom, that fate falling to Norway instead.
“I want to say thank you so much thanks you for believing in me, I wouldn’t have been able to do with this without you,” a jubilant Loreen said as she was crowned champion. “This is not just mine, it is ours.”
The win is Sweden’s fifth overall, and its first since 1999.
