In a surprisingly emotional ceremony, Lance Bass spoke of his fear of coming out for fear he’d ‘destroy’ career. However, he went on to thank his bandmates for making him the person he is today.

So many nights onstage, I’d see young, gay fans singing their hearts out and I wanted so badly to let you know, I was you. I just didn’t have the strength then. But I do today and so let me say loud and proud to all my LGBT brothers and sisters, who embrace me and show me the way to be who I am, thank you so much.
I was a kid when we came together and I’m a man today because of the family I have and you. I love you guys.”

JC then went on to thank the band’s late pop vocal producer and writer Robin Wiley.

*NSYNC is made up of an apostrophe and five letters. Robin Wiley: I always looked at her as the apostrophe in the band.”

And Justin thanked all their mams. Good man, JT! Get the mammies in or they’ll be raging.

Given that it was April 30th, the day before May 1st if you’re familar with a calendar, JC also decided to pay homage to the meme that gave the band a new lease of life in d’internet age.

Happy May 1st! It truly is “gonna be May”.
