Off the record - upcoming Irish world record attempts
HIGH ACHIEVERS LIKE four-time world champion Katie Taylor can make us wonder what we’ve been doing with our time but there are easier ways to become a world beater.
This summer there are dozens of world record attempts taking place around the country and they all need your help. Here’s a sample of how you can get your own slice of world record glory:
The most people sowing seedlings at the same time
Bloom takes place this weekend in the Phoenix Park and as part of the Grow It Yourself initiative a world record attempt is taking place tomorrow. The record currently stands at 904 people – set in Thailand.
WHY: For the craic. And to show the record holders in Suphanburi Province, Thailand that the Irish can sow seeds with the best of them.
WHEN: 4 June
WHERE: Bloom in Dublin’s Phoenix Park
The most different makes of motorcycle in a parade
As part of Motorcycle Safety Week in the UK, motorbike enthusiasts will descend on 22 June. The current record is 138 different makes at an event organised by the Killspills Campaign (UK) in Leicestershire in 2007.
WHY: To encourage motorcyclists to complete the IAM’s advanced Riding Test and BikeSafe’s FREE rider assessment by the PSNI.
WHEN: 22 June
WHERE: Queens Road, Titanic Quarter, Belfast
The most combine harvesters working simultaneously in the same field
The record was set in Ireland in 2009 but snatched cruelly away by Canada last year. The new target is 300 combines with at least one from every county in Ireland.
WHY: To raise €30,000 for Barnardos, Self Help Africa, The National Rehabilitation Trust and the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre
WHEN: 21 July from 1pm – 6pm, the record attempt will take place approximately at 3pm
WHERE: Platin, Duleek, Co Meath

The longest continuous game of tag rugby in history
This event will see two teams – The Mengal Taggers and The Tropics – play for 30 hours in memory of family and friends they have lost to cancer. It will be done in a relay style.
WHY: To raise money for Cancer Research UK
WHEN: 9 and 10 June
WHERE: Banbridge Rugby Club, Co Down
The most people dancing the Thriller dance at the same time
The ‘Thrill on the Hill’ aims to lure 15,000 Michael Jackson enthusiasts to Castlebar in July. They’re hoping to beat the record which currently stands at 13, 597 which was set in Mexico in 2009.
WHY: To raise money for the in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Respiratory Unit in Mayo General Hospital
WHEN: 29 July
WHERE: Elvery’s McHale Park, Castlebar, Co Mayo
