On this night in 1997 you were listening to... Puff Daddy
BACK WHEN THE name ‘P Diddy’ was but a badly-spelled drunken scrawl on a pub toilet door, Puff Daddy made his big arrival into the charts on this, a song about his old friend Notorious Big.
Sampling the Police’s 1983 single ‘Every Breath You Take’, ‘I’ll Be Missing You’ pays homage to the late BIG’s career.
The song was a massive hit, and meant that Puff could go on to release a slew of hits, such as ‘Been Around the World’ and ‘It’s All About the Benjamins’.
Obsessed with money, fame and himself, Puff (who later changed his name to the unfortunate P Diddy) became the new face of commercial hip hop, leaving the charts unscathed for quite a period of time.
