IMAGINE THE SCENE. It’s a Friday night in November. It’s 1990. And on the stereo is… an ode to Ireland’s stalwart centre-back Paul McGrath.
The creation of Watch Your House – an act named after a uniquely Irish footballing term – Ooh Ahh Paul McGrath was number one for two weeks, between Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers and Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice.
(When Nelson Mandela visited Ireland that year, he was famously serenaded with chants of ‘Ooh! Ahh! Paul McGrath’s da!’ Which must have been a little confusing.)
