“I’M JOE. AND I f**kin hate Paddy’s Day.”
So begins Irish sketch comedy group Windup Merchantz’s Paddy’s Day video this year that’s so good it’s blowing up on Facebook.
The premise was simple: send the most cynical interviewer to the streets of Dublin to interview the Paddy’s Day revellers with plenty of sarcasm. Joe’s first question to two party-goers in Temple Bar summed up his position:
“I just can’t stand Paddy’s Day. What is it that everyone likes about it?”
“Everyone’s in a good mood” they say. To which Joe replies, “I’m not in a good mood.”
He saw first hand how hard it is to walk the streets:
“Don’t worry, I’ll just walk around yiz, that’s grand. That’s OK, just stand there I’ll walk around.”
And got some, eh, interesting responses from visitors to the capital on our national day:
“My dad’s grandad’s grandad was Irish.”
If this Dublin auld lad going viral taught us anything, it’s that there’s a large section of Irish people that roll their collective eyes at the thought of Dublin on Paddy’s Day.
