8 weird PC games you might have played in the 90s/00s
1. Chip’s Challenge
Ok, let’s start off with the plot of this one, ’cause it’s a doozy.
The puzzle game sees our hero Chip McCallahan attempting to navigate through Melinda The Mental Marvel’s “Clubhouse” (a series of increasingly difficult puzzles) in order to prove himself and gain membership to the very exclusive Bit Buster Club.
Yep.
You basically ran around collecting keys and microchips, while also gathering footwear which meant you can walk on fire.
2. Ozzie’s World
Voiced by Haley Joel Osment, Ozzie is “a curious and imaginative young 7-year-old orphaned sea otter pup who serves as the series’ main protagonist”. (Thanks Wikipedia for the grim confirmation that his parents are dead).
The game focuses on teaching children science and ecology in different environments.
In fairness, it did a lot for teaching me about how rain works and why you shouldn’t throw rubbish into the sea.
3. SkiFree
Ski Free’s premise is pretty simple – you ski down a hill and avoid obstacles.
Easy, right? WRONG. There are about 45,000 trees to avoid, as well as an Abonimable Snowman who will chase you and eat you after 2,000 m.
The game is available to play for free here, which shows the Snowman coming to a pretty grim end as a result of climate change.
Is nothing sacred!?
4. Blinky Bill’s Ghost Cave
Some aspects of the game are innocent enough – a gentle old cartoon wombat tells you a story, some memory games …
Then at one point, you’re able to dismember and reassembly Blinky and his pals. Traumatic for a child under 10 to say the least.
5. Theme Hospital
The 1997 game saw people presenting themselves to medical professionals with conditions like Elvis Presley syndrome, the squits and spare ribs (extra rib growth).
6. Babyz
To preface this – Petz is class, because Petz had animals. And they were fun.
This was just kind of creepy, and involved real life babyzzzzz raising internet babyzzzzzzz.
Also, why were all those babyzzzzzzzzz in that house by themselves? Not to mention the fact that you could PIT THE BABYZZZZ AGAINST EACH OTHER.
7. Rollercoaster Tycoon
Ok, this wasn’t so much a weird game – in it, you’re an amusement park manager. You have to make sure attendees aren’t bored and that your park makes enough money.
It was more what people could do within the game – like drowning customers for getting sick after they came off amusements.
Or similarly, moving them to an inescapable plot of land, like this guy did.
The balloons floating away is … A lot.
8. Granny’s Garden
This one was reserved for school because no way in hell was this game allowed to be sold to the public.
The Windows version is nowhere to be found on YouTube, bar this really shoot footage from some primary school students.
It was basically the most non-nonsensical of puzzle games, featuring a scary witch whose cackles still haunt me in the wee hours.
Honestly. This video will never do it justice.
